Summer of 1989: Hanna and Andreas, both seventeen, are trying to escape from the German Democratic Republic by swimming the Baltic Sea to West Germany. As they are in constant danger of being discovered by the border patrol boats, they can’t talk, so the hours drag on endlessly. Trying to keep her mind from boredom and fatigue, Hanna recalls her childhood and youth under a more and more repressive regime.
